Lactalis is Italy’s no. 1 food manufacturer

The Lactalis Group, with its companies Galbani, Parmalat and Nuova Castelli, recorded a 5.97% increase in turnover in Italy in 2020, reaching €2.326bn, or 11% of the total turnover of the italian food sector.

This is according to a study carried out by The European House – Ambrosetti, according to which the French group is the largest food producer in Italy, both in terms of the number of production sites – 30 factories – and in terms of territorial extension, with a presence in 10 regions. Of the €2.3bn turnover generated in 2020, Galbani accounts for 51%, the Parmalat brand for 43% and Nuova Castelli for 6%.

Today, Lactalis Italia involves 6,370 companies as suppliers of goods and services in its supply chain, 55% of which are SMEs located throughout Italy, with sales totalling €1.6bn in 2020. With purchases worth €641m from 16 regions, Lactalis Italia is also the leading buyer in the Italian dairy chain, according to the study, with 1.4bn litres per year, equivalent to around 12% of national production. Lactalis is the leading Italian producer of cheese and PDO cheese with 265,000 tons and of liquid milk with over 700,000 tons of sales.

Lactalis Italia has invested more than €280m in the last five years, a quarter of which in sustainability and innovation. The company employs 4,950 people, a figure that increases to 19,030 when indirect and induced employment effects are taken into account.
